Technical Education After Covid-19



Technical education is one of the most sought after professional education amongst various disciplines of professional education such as Medical, Pharmacy, Law, Library Science, Management etc. One of the unique features of the professional education is the application oriented practical training imparted in laboratories. Practical training as part of the professional education differentiates the professional education from the other educational programmes which are generally considered as purely of academic nature and impart theoretical knowledge.

However, spread of Covide-19 pandemic has impacted the higher education worldwide. Closure of Higher educational institutes led to commencement of online teaching-learning process. This situation has put severe restriction on conduct of practical classes where there is a need to observe the phenomenon, change the values of variable quantities, observe its impact on the process and deduce the analogy. It therefore calls for the need of virtual labs.

Suffice to say that during Covid-19, only those technical institutions are likely to survive which have developed their own virtual labs. Therefore, any technical institution conducting technical education programme without the support of virtual lab is only eyewash- a total dishonesty amounting to criminal act. Regulatory bodies should therefore promptly identify and derecognize such technical institutions.

As a matter of fact, establishment of virtual lab itself is not an end to the challenges posed by Covid-19, instead the regulatory bodies should explore the limitations of virtual labs and encourage the technical educations to remove them so that a realistic study can be carried out.
